Rising Stars is AB Academy of Music’s program for high-achieving pre-college pianists who are ready to deepen their artistry, expand their performance experience, and engage with a vibrant community of musicians.
The program gives young pianists opportunities to perform, learn from distinguished artists, connect with their peers and audiences, and explore music beyond the weekly lesson. Rising Stars are encouraged to ask questions, exchange ideas, listen to one another, and develop the curiosity, confidence, and artistic independence essential to their growth as musicians.
Rising Stars may participate in Master Classes with local and guest artists, offering the opportunity to perform for accomplished musicians, receive new perspectives, and observe fellow pianists in an intensive learning environment. ABAM aims to offer at least one Master Class opportunity per semester, based on artist availability. Participation is offered in consultation with and upon the recommendation of the student’s primary teacher.
Performance is an important part of becoming an artist. Rising Stars are encouraged to participate regularly in Piano Lab, ABAM’s welcoming performance forum where musicians can share works in progress, try new repertoire, gain stage experience, and learn through listening to others.
Rising Stars may sign up to perform in multiple Piano Labs throughout the year, space permitting. To ensure that performance opportunities are shared broadly across the Academy community, priority may be given to musicians who have not yet performed and to Amateur Performers.
ABAM is committed to creating as many meaningful performance opportunities as possible for all of its pianists.
Rising Stars are also eligible for selection for one of ABAM’s two Gala performances each year, giving exceptional young musicians the opportunity to present their work in a special concert setting and share their artistry with the broader ABAM community.
At the heart of Rising Stars is the belief that young musicians grow not only through practice and instruction, but also through performing, listening, questioning, collaborating, and belonging to a community of fellow artists.
Through encounters with peers, teachers, guest artists, and audiences, Rising Stars are invited to explore their individual artistic voices while discovering new ideas and perspectives. The program encourages young pianists to approach music with openness and imagination—and to develop the confidence, generosity, and curiosity that will serve them wherever their musical journeys lead.
